Current Projects

The key to engaging with local communities is honest and transparent communication. We have put together the most important information about our current large-scale projects, including key facts and FAQs.

We can help you prepare projects eligible for CEFC finance support, ARENA funding or ERF support.

Photon Energy is actively engaged in projects which are eligible for ARENA funding and is looking for energy users who would like to take advantage of available funding to further improve the feasibility of Solar, Solar Storage and Energy efficiency projects.

ARENA funding

ARENA is the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, a commercially oriented agency established by the Australian Government on 1 July 2012. It has two objectives: to improve the competitiveness of renewable energy technologies, and to increase the supply of renewable energy in Australia.

There is approximately $2.5 billion in funding available to:

  • fund renewable energy projects
  • support research and development activities
  • support activities to capture and share knowledge

Photon Energy is actively engaged in projects which are eligible for ARENA funding and is looking for energy users who would like to take advantage of available funding to further improve the feasibility of Solar, Solar Storage and Energy efficiency projects.

CEFC funding

The Clean Energy Finance Corporation operates like a traditional financier. It works collaboratively with co-financiers and project proponents to seek ways to secure financing solutions for the clean energy sector.

Using a full range of financial instruments, the CEFC co-finances and invests - directly and indirectly - in clean energy projects and technologies.

The CEFC focuses on projects and technologies at the later stages of development which have a positive expected rate of return and have the capacity to service and repay capital. They can also look at earlier stage projects which have significant support and a risk profile appropriate for CEFC.

Other programmes

There are other state and federal government programmes available to enable the roll-out of renewable energy projects, from commercial and industrial through to utility-scale.

Renewable Energy Certificates

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are the most important and most accessible incentive available in Australia to encourage investment in renewable energy systems and provide a significant improvement in returns to system owners.

We can manage the registration of solar power stations and systems as well as the creation, management and trading of RECs - both Small-Scale Technical Certificates (STCs) and Large-Scale Generation Certificates (LGCs).

What are Renewable Energy Certificates?

The Renewable Energy Target is an Australian Government scheme designed to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in the electricity sector and encourage the additional generation of electricity from sustainable and renewable sources.

The Renewable Energy Target works by allowing both large-scale power stations (over 100 kWp) and the owners of small-scale systems (under 100 kWp) to create certificates for every megawatt hour of power they generate.

Certificates are then purchased by retailers who sell the electricity. These electricity retailers have legal obligations to surrender certificates to the Clean Energy Regulator, in percentages set by regulation each year. This creates a market which provides financial incentives to both large-scale renewable energy power stations and the owners of small-scale renewable energy systems.

In the case of small-scale systems, all certificates are provided ‘up front’ for the systems’ expected power generation or displacement over a 15 year period. Generally, customers assign the right to create their certificates to an agent in return for a lower purchase price. The level of this benefit differs across the country depending on the level of solar radiation.
