Photon Energy N.V. (WSE: PEN, the 'Group') announcesthat Photon Water Technology s.r.o. (‘Photon Water’ or the‘Company’) – the Group’s subsidiary dedicated to developing anddistributing water treatment systems – has started design work forthe deployment of a unique technology called Wetland+ at Jaworzno,a site in Poland, as part of an international consortium toimplement the EU-funded project Innovative Technology Based onConstructed Wetlands for Treatment of Pesticide-ContaminatedWaters (LIFEPOPWAT).
The heavily research-based technology is expected to reduce thelevels of HCH in stream waters near the site. Lindane, a form ofHCH, was widely used in the EU as a pesticide and a treatment forlice and scabies until its production and application were bannedin 2004. Nevertheless, this persistent organic pollutant stillposes serious health risks for the residents of affected areas.
The Polish part of the consortium is represented by the CentralMining Institute (pl. Główny Instytut Górnictwa) and the City ofJaworzno. In addition to Photon Water, participants in theconsortium include the Technical University of Liberec (CZ) andAarhus University (DK), as well as SERPOL (FR) and the Czechstate-owned company DIAMO (CZ). The project commenced on 1 January2020 and is scheduled to end on 31 December 2023.
In parallel with the LIFEPOPWAT project, Photon Water is part ofanother EU-funded consortium project to map and improve theknowledge base regarding the presence and disposal of HCH andlindane in the EU. Photon Water has been sub-contracted by thecompany leading the project, Tauw BV, to help with theinventorisation of HCH-contaminated sites in the Czech Republic andto assist one of the site owners with HCH-contaminated sitemanagement.
'Photon Water’s participation in these two projects istestament to our team’s capabilities across multiple areas linkedto water treatment and lake management as well as ground water andsoil remediation. Lindane is unfortunately only one of manycontaminants polluting our environment and threatening our health.Through our business line Photon Water, we are determined tocontribute to the enormous task of remediating the widespreaddamage globally,' comments Georg Hotar, CEO of PhotonEnergy.
Replicating the proven business model of Photon Energy, whichprovides solar solutions and services, Photon Water develops andsupplies water purification, remediation, and treatment systemssuch as ultrasonic algae control and membrane technology.Additionally, the company develops and provides contaminatedgroundwater and land remediation solutions suitable for a varietyof applications, addressing major environmental issues on a globalscale.
